How will your new venture make money?

Elaine will be teaching Class 6 of the MIT Enterprise Forum of Cambridge’s Start Smart program. Start Smart is a hands-on class for entrepreneurs who are serious about launching a startup. CEO’s, successful entrepreneurs and investors who’ve done it all before are invited guest speakers and an integral component of the learning experience. Elaine will be bringing MIT’s entrepreneurship education content to the program in this class.

Invent Triad: A Forum on Invention Ecosystem for the Bio-Economy

Elaine served as a panelist on two panels in the Invent Triad event, hosted by Professor Elham Fini at the North Carolina Agriculture and Technology University. The first panel, titled “The Human Face of Invention: AAAS-Lemelson Invention Ambassador Program”, was moderated by Neela White of the AAAS, and focused on how the panelists were inspired to become inventors, and how invention and innovation can solve real problems and have impact in the real world. The second panel, titled “Influence: Role of a working ecosystem”, and focused on the many elements that make up a successful and sustainable innovation ecosystem.

From Making to Entrepreneurship: The MIT Way

Elaine gave a talk about making and entrepreneurship to a cross disciplinary group of students at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. In this talk, Elaine shared the maker and entrepreneurship culture at MIT. It all comes down to the MIT motto: Mens et Manus – Mind and Hand. Neither making nor entrepreneurship can be learned from books alone – practice makes perfect. We discussed the importance of experimentation and of measuring success by the speed at which we learn via rapid experiments, not by being proved right by the market.

Elaine was one of the AAAS-Lemelson Inventor Ambassadors featured in an IBM Academy of Technology podcast. In this talk, Elaine talked about one of her areas of invention – haptic devices – and the impact that this class of technology can have on human-machine interfaces.

C-Suite Women in Tech Industry

Elaine was a panelist for a panel titled “C-Suite Women in Tech Industry”, hosted by the US Pan Asian American Chamber of Commerce Education Foundation (USPAACC). Topics discussed includes gender and pay parity, availability of venture funds for female entrepreneurs, strategies for women to rise to leadership positions in a male dominated industry, and tips and tricks to help young women succeed when they are just starting out in tech.
